Age Requirements
Students must be of 18 years of age to apply

AcademicRequirements
Those undertaking the Diploma of Automotive Technology must have completed an automotive Certificate IV qualification in one of the following disciplines, or be able to demonstrate equivalent competency.

• AUR40216 Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis
• AUR40816 Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Overhauling

Physical Requirements

Must be physically able to work in the automotive industry, including safely lifting, carrying, and handling heavy equipment and parts (such as removing and installing engine electrical components).

English Proficiency Requirements

To enroll in the course at Innovative Institute, applicant must meet one of the following English language proficiency standards equivalent to an IELTS (General or Academic Overall) 6.0 with no individual band score less than 5.0.

Note:

• Results older than two years are not acceptable (for offshore applicants).
• For Level 1 countries students, they successfully complete Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital skills (LLND) Test administered by Innovative Institute of Australia

After achieving AUR50216 – Diploma of Automotive Technology ,
students may undertake: Advanced Diploma qualifications

Exit Pathway :
Students obtaining a competency for all units in this course will be awarded the full qualification AUR50216 – Diploma qualification, including certificate and Record of results. Students not obtaining a competent result for all units in this course or leaving the course in middle will receive a Statement of Attainment. Indicating the actual number of units, they achieve competency

The Diploma of Automotive Technology prepares new employees or recognises and develops existing workers who are performing advanced diagnosis and design tasks in the automotive industry. Job roles related to this qualification include:

• Advanced diagnostic technician
• Automotive system designer

The course spans 63 weeks, including scheduled term breaks. Students are required to attend 20 hours of classes/practical sessions per week, which include face-to-face instruction, simulated practical learning, and supervised assessment activities.

Independent study, such as homework, reading, or online research done at home, does not count toward the 20-hour requirement

• Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): A formal assessment process that evaluates your existing skills and experience—gained through work, training, or life—to determine if you meet the requirements of specific course units.
• Credit Transfer: A process that grants recognition for equivalent units previously completed at other registered training organisations, without the need for reassessment. Students who have completed corresponding units of competency and/or units contained within the packaging rules can apply for Credit Transfer.

These processes are conducted in line with the Standards for RTOs 2025, specifically Standard 1.6 and 1.7, and are available to all eligible students.

We ensure a transparent, supportive, and efficient pathway to help you achieve your goals sooner.

Assessment methods used will be one or more of:

• Practical demonstrations: Showing skills in servicing, diagnostics, and repairs.
• Written tests: Short-answer or multiple-choice questions on theory and safety.
• Workplace observation: Assessors watch students perform tasks in real or simulated settings.
• Projects/assignments: Case studies, repair reports, or diagnostic exercises.

All in-person sessions are conducted at one of the following Innovative Institute of Australia campuses:

• Main Campus: 1A Palmerston Grove, Oakleigh, VIC 3166
• Automotive Workshop: 1/68 Fenton Street, Huntingdale, VIC 3166

Students will be notified of their designated campus location prior to the commencement of classes. 

Participants need to complete Twelve (12) units of competencies.
This qualification has:
Core units = 1 Unit
Elective units = 11 Units
Elective units must be relevant to the work environment and the qualification, maintain the integrity of the AQF alignment and contribute to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome.
